RAPAD Coalition Meeting Minutes
December 22nd, 2015
Max’s Grill, Olivia, 12:00pm
Present: Susan Williams/Volunteer, Lamont Jacobson/Renville County Commissioner, Jennifer Mendoza/Guia Program, Virginia Sullivan/Volunteer/Coalition Secretary, Sarah Reznecheck/RCW Social Worker, Brad Rekstad/National Guard Counter Drug Task Force, Dave Drager/Pastor, Hector, MN
Business: Match forms were handed out to coalition members. Financial reports will be postponed due to Annie being ill. CACDCA training: Coalition members are encouraged to attend as representatives are needed. Sarah and Jennifer are interested in attending. Sarah will ask youth to attend. Brad stated he attended and the conference has an adult as well as youth group training which are very informative. Kari, Susan and Annie went to Washington D.C. for an interesting 2 long days. They discussed financial issues with Kari & lobbying. It is not ok to use grant money for this; or ask people to vote for certain things. All personal ideas must be kept voiced as personal.
Youth Groups: Sarah reported RCW received the “Talk they hear you” campaign from SAMHSA. The “Talk. They Hear You.” campaign aims to reduce underage drinking among youth ages 9 to 15 by providing parents and caregivers with information and resources they need to start addressing the issue of alcohol with their children early. Coalition members discussed this and marijuana issues with youth being more open about use than in the past.
GUIA Program: Jennifer informed coalition members that the group is still active in helping Latino youth in prevention efforts. Jennifer stated she will continue to make contact with youth at RCW and BOLD once a week and is also participating in the 21st Century program.
Dave Drager reported that he has made contact with Buffalo Lake Hector schools Dean of Students about a prevention youth group. He will invite the staff to Annie’s presentation/overview of the youth program. Sarah suggested that if there is not a group that it could “piggyback” with the student council to form one.
Old Business: Jill now has the Tobacco retailer training online. The RAPAD Steering Committee will meet in January 2016 to discuss strategic goals.
New Business: Coalition members discussed a handout showing marijuana legislation as of July 2015 and the increase in use for youth in 12th grade. RFC Hope Torma has resigned and is now the new DFC Coordinator at Pine River. Alex Loesch will inform coalition members about the January results of the SHARE survey for students and will discuss the Four Core Measures that need to be reported to the Federal Government. Coalition members discussed an article about a teen who died from Meth use. Meeting was adjourned.
Next Meeting: January 22nd, 2016, Max’s Grill 12 NOON in Olivia
Respectfully submitted: Virginia Sullivan/Coalition Secretary
