RAPAD Coalition Meeting Minutes
Friday September 25th, 2015
Max’s Grill, Olivia 12:00 P.M.
Present: Annie Tepfer/RAPAD Co Ordinator, Susan Williams/Volunteer, Lamont Jacobson/Renville County Commissioner, Dave Torgelson/Renville County Attorney, Virginia Sullivan/Volunteer/Coalition Secretary, Jill Bruns/Public Health, Sarah Reznecheck/RCW Social Worker, Hannah Abraham/SHIP Co Ordinator, Chuck Blum/KOLV Radio, Jennifer Mendoza/Guia Program, Dave Drager/Pastor, Hector, MN
Business: Match forms were handed out to coalition members, meeting minutes & agenda were approved. Annie shared the good news that the RAPAD coalition was funded by DFC for year 6-10 for another 5 years. Annie congratulated the coalition and also Jill Bruns, Rick Loseth & Debb Sheehan for their assistance in writing the grant. She also shared the list of all the grantees in Minnesota. She also stated that a coalition member could attend with her for the new DFC training in Washington in December. She informed the coalition that a carryover request for the No-Cost Extension of $24,255 has been submitted to DFC Grants management. In October coalition members will elect new officers and appoint committee members. They will also review the Strategic Plan and By Laws then.
Member Appreciation: Annie arranged an appreciation lunch for coalition members to celebrate their dedication to RAPAD and all the different things they have done to help it be successful. Coalition members enjoyed the lunch and sharing jokes and some history of the coalition when it started. Congratulations!!!
Program Sharing Conference: Annie shared that she nominated the coalition for the Prevention Award of the Year and RAPAD won the award! The award will be presented during the program sharing conference which will cover many prevention topics ATOD, Violence Prevention, etc. Coalition members have been invited to be there to accept the award with Annie. Coalition members expressed their excitement at more good news!
Annie attended the training at Prairie’s Edge Casino in Granite Falls for Native American Substance Abuse and Prevention, September 21-24th. She shared with coalition members that 20 people attended. Upper Sioux members also attended. She noted that mental health intervention and evaluation will have to look very different due to Native American beliefs and cultural practices. Lamont Jacobson stated he had a friend that hears the voices of his ancestors and this is very common with Native American culture. Annie stated how this can be misunderstood or misdiagnosed.
SHIP Grant Activities: Hannah passed around a summary of all the activities that SHIP was involved in around the county. She stated their funding does not start until November 3rd. Tobacco
Youth Group Reports: Jennifer Mendoza reported that the Guia program is ongoing & there are many families in the program. She also will assist with the RCW 21st Century program this fall. Sarah Reznechek reported that the TADA group is planning fundraising with an idea for a healthy snack cart for students that don’t eat breakfast. The youth want to help others internationally and may get involved with the Food for Kids program that is held at the community center in Sacred Heart, MN. The youth will be participating in Red Ribbon week in October and also having a contest with the younger grades for the yearly food drive.
Other: Annie will be collaborating with BOLD ministerial for a Suicide prevention speaker due to the recent suicide of student. BOLD Superintendent Mr Dodson will also collaborate for this event. Dave Drager shared that Hector will be having their homecoming and he will contact Buffalo Lake Hector to try to get the more active in the coalition. Annie stated that Buffalo Lake Hector has been provided with preventative curriculum for their students. She would like to see them more active in prevention efforts.
Upcoming Trainings: Virginia shared information about a training “Hope and Healing” that will be held at Prairies Edge Casino in Granite Falls. The cost is $75.00. Tuesday November 17th in Willmar is a training for Youth in a Global Community sponsored by U of M.
