Present: Dave Torgelson, County Attorney, Jennifer Mendoza, SHIP; Leah Schueler, SHIP; Derek Lee, Olivia Police Chief; Jill Bruns, RC Public Health, Sarah Reznechek, RCW Social Worker; Susan Williams, Volunteer; Jessica Brown, St. Mary’s Counselor; Annie Tepfer, Coalition Coordinator; Chuck Blum, Lakeland Broadcasting; Brittany Schwenke, Public Health Accountant.
Approval of meeting minutes and agenda for the meeting was motioned and approved. In-Kind Match forms were asked to be filled out and left with Annie at the end of the meeting.
LaMont was not in attendance but Annie let the coalition members know that he would still like to be a coalition member as a volunteer. LaMont would be getting a sample T-Shirt for next meeting for us to see. Annie shared the evaluation report from the “Keep Calm & Lead On” Youth Leadership training event that was held Oct. 14th- Evaluation Report showed that most everyone thought the training was good or great, they liked the venue at the EPIK building, speakers were well received and they thought it would be good to do again next year. Sarah and Jennifer were in attendance during the leadership training and reported that the youth really liked the day and it went well.
SHIP~ Leah & Jennifer announced that Jennifer has transitioned from the Guia program to the Kandiyohi/Renville County SHIP program. Leah shared what they have accomplished last year and also what the future plans are in Renville County. They also shared the Kandiyohi County Tobacco Ordinance that passed last week which included a ban on sampling, 25 foot no smoking from all public buildings entrances and including E-Cigarettes in the Clean Indoor Air Act.
Election of New Steering Committee. Nominations were taken from the members which included LaMont Jacobsen, Jill Bruns, Susan Williams, Chuck Blum, Jessica Brown were voted in. The Steering Committee will then appoint a Chair, Vice-Chair and secretary from the Steering Committee.
Budget – Brittany was introduced to the coalition members and shared the Budget balance for the end of year 6 with a carryover of $7,289.48 to year 7 budget. Brittany also mentioned that the In-Kind Match increases with year 7-10. Year 7 match will be $156,250 plus the $7,289.48 carryover.
Sarah Reznechek youth TADA Youth Group will again be having a Food Shelf contest at RCW with each grade competing by the most amount of items collected. The “Your Amazing” Campaign is to help kids participate in positive behaviors while standing up to negative pressures or influences. Teachers will have tickets to give out to students who they observe doing Random Acts of Kindness which they will get an Your Awesome Cup filled with candy and also have their name entered in a monthly drawing for a free ticket to a school event. Jessica Brown, at St Mary’s School, had the students participate in Red Ribbon Week with dress up days during the week and prevention messages. Paula Sturm, Cedar Mountain celebrated Red Ribbon Week the first week in November also. Jennifer reported on the Guia Program. They will not be replacing her position right away but please keep any referrals coming to Pablo from Latino students needing help with substance use issues. Olivia’s House of Hope will be opening its doors approximately January 1st if all goes well as a transitional home for women coming out of chemical dependency, treatment, incarceration etc. .
Chuck-Media- Lakeland Broadcasting will be working with Annie on a RAPAD Christmas message to be played, on commercial free radio Christmas Eve. Law Enforcement- Derek Lee has seen more arrests on the roads with driving impairment caused by other illegal substances. Discussion was held about the abuse of prescription drugs on the rise and the need for more awareness and education for our communities in Renville County. Chuck and Susan commented it may be time to do another campaign around our Medication Disposal Program and a radio ad that has a dialogue around cleaning out that medicine cabinet and bringing any old, unused or expired medications to one of our medicine drop boxes across the county. Meeting was adjourned at 1:30pm.
