RAPAD Coalition Meeting Minutes
October 24th, 2017
Renville County Gov Bldg/ 12:00 to 1:30pm
Present: Lamont Jacobson/Volunteer, Annie Tepfer/RAPAD Coalition, Dave Torgelson/County Attorney, Virginia Sullivan/Volunteer, Susan Williams/Volunteer, Jill Bruns/RC Public Health, Chuck Blum/KOLV, Leah Schueler/SHIP, Bill Schmitz/Hometown Bank
Old Business: Lamont called the meeting to order & match forms were passed out to coalition members. Susan made a motion to approve the minutes & agenda; it was seconded by Chuck. Virginia volunteered to take the meeting minutes. Chuck gave the coalition the results of the RAPAD online quiz. The quiz ran on 3 radio stations, 668 quizes were taken; 216 entered the drawing. Chuck noted that 77% of the people that took the quiz were female. Lamont stated he knew the winner of the drawing as she attends his church. Annie shared with the coalition that she attended the Program Sharing Conference. The conference has many break out sessions by different programs. By sharing how their programs work, and what is effective prevention, presenters and participants learn from one another.
New Business: Annie shared Dave Baker’s story about his son Dan who was addicted to opoids. They have a video on vimeo: https://vimeo.com/236257140 Dave & his wife talk about how their son was addicted after an injury. Dave is working in the legislature for change in warning labels on prescriptions about opiods being highly addictive. His foundation website has information on opoids and resources. Annie showed coalition members the MN Dept of health Opoid Dashboard which shows statistics and other information about opoid drugs. Tobacco ordinance: Jill & Leah spoke to the city council members about the tobacco ordinance that is in place. The Renville City Council adopted their own tobacco ordinance that changes proximity of a business to schools to allow 2 new businesses to open in Renville. Dollar General and Casey’s want to open in locations that are less than 1,000 feet from the high school. Renville City Council is proposing higher fines on non compliance and also fines for youth using tobacco in public places. Coalition members discussed whether or not to change the present ordinance so that businesses are not discouraged in opening in small towns. The discussion will be ongoing until the next coalition meeting. Coalition members were encouraged to share their views on this.
Gustavus Student Project: Morgan Fennern is developing a project for youth through her public discourse class. She chose marijuana as the focus at BOLD High school. Presently BOLD does not have a youth alcohol prevention group. Annie has shown Morgan the SHARE data from the schools. Morgan wants to change the environment around marijuana use. She will return to report to the coalition members when she finalizes her ideas and strategy.
Coalition Elections: Elections of Chair, Co Chair, etc will be held at the November coalition meeting.
Community Partners: BHLS will have a red ribbon event for the students concerning alcohol awareness. Annie will present to 8th & 9th grades about tobacco health. The school also has a motivational speaker planned for the students.
Upcoming Trainings: Youth Leadership Training November 2nd, EPIK Bldg in Willmar, RBST (Responsible Beverage Server Training) November 6th at the Main Street Bar & Grill in Renville, ACES Training, November 7th Max’s Grill 1:30 to 4:30pm, Regional trainings for Youth Engagement-Designing and Supporting Youth in Community Change, flyer will have the dates.
Next meeting: November 28th, Renville County HS Bldg/lower level 12:00pm to 1:30pm
