RAPAD Coalition Meeting
Minutes Sept 25th, 2018
12:00 to 1:30pm, Renville County Govt Bldg, Olivia, MN
Present: Dave Torgelson/County Attorney, Virginia Sullivan/Secretary, Lamont Jacobson/Chair, Janette Oehlers/Guia Coach/Pact For Families, Dave Drager/Pastor Buffalo Lake Hector, Janine Kramer/Olivia House of Hope, Samantha Nelson/RC Hospital, Jill Pelzel/RC Human Services
Old Business: Coalition members did introductions and Lamont asked that match forms be filled out and turned in. Members discussed events of their week during introductions. Annie showed a video of her son’s deployment with the Red Bulls 34th Infantry Division to Kuwaiit. He will participate there with his unit in Operation Spartan Shield. Dave shared that he brought a cake for coalition members in celebration of he & his wife’s 50th wedding anniversary. Congratulations to them, this is becoming a very rare event in society! Approval of the meeting minutes: Virginia made a motion, seconded by Dave Drager, motion carried. Approval of the agenda, Dave Drager made a motion, Janine seconded, motion carried.
New Business: Annie showed coalition members a video from the White House, offering training for emergency personnel coming into a scene where Fentanyl has been used. Police can be exposed to fentanyl through contact by hands, eyes and inhaling the powder. The video stated there is sometimes first responder confusion about how to interact when they are called to give assistance. Pact For Families Collaborative Meeting for November: November 14th, in Olivia in the Renville County Government building basement; speaker Kate Erickson will be featured. Coalition members are encouraged to attend. Kate is from the Minnesota Department of Health. She will be speaking on how drugs affect health.
Suicide prevention: Dave Drager stated there was a good turnout for “Just One Life” suicide prevention event on September 9th. Virginia stated parents who attended the Parent Advisory Committee noted that they and their families enjoyed the event. A similar event at BLHS also had a good turnout of youth and parents in the community. Annie shared a letter to the editor that she and Joe wrote concerning youth substance abuse and suicide and how the coalition plans to continue to address issues that affect our youth.
Juvenile Education through Courts and Probation: Cali Steffel presented to the coalition last month about the juvenile offender program currently in force. Annie attended with Cali. The Resorative Justice Program started in September. There are currently 10 open youth cases. Cali would like to see educational classes for youth about underage drinking after seeing a youth speak to the judge about how she has been an alcoholic since her father’s death. Another 14 year old girl was in violation of a social host ordinance for drug and alcohol use at a party for friends.
Bio Legacy Grant Application: RAPAd may apply for this. Janine stated she would like to apply to obtain an exercise bike for the residents of Olivia’s House of Hope.
DFC Grantees: Lower Sioux received a DFC grant for drug free communities. Many other countines and coalitions were funded.
Renville County Hospital: RC Hospital & Clinics is having an open house September 16th from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. There will be information on nutrition, robotic surgery, pain management, joints, orthepedics, health & wellness, podiatry, OB and diabetic care. Samantha encouraged coalition members to attend. The prescription drug committee is in the process of discussing speakers that could come to the meetings.
Community partners: Olivia’s House of Hope: Janine reported that beds are full. Two people are transitioning out of the program on October 1st. Many of the residents have local jobs. They are working with Lori Classman in her Getting Ahead program. Residents also participate in the Helping Hearts program.
Faith based: Dave stated they are in their fifth quarter planning and another National Night Out may be in the works. Annie stated to Dave that if they are she could contribute coalition funding to help with the event for the youth and community.
Upcoming trainings & meetings: Program Sharing, St. Cloud, October 25th & 26th, CADCA Conference in Washington DC, February 4th -7th, 2019. Coalition members are encouraged to attend. 5/25 Committee meeting will meet October 10th at 10:00 a.m. before the Pact For Families full collaborative meeting at 1: 45 p.m.
